When AVs are fully optimized, they will operate safely and reliably with or without a human driver present or providing input. It will involve identifying every and any potential failure mode and then designing in features and characteristics that minimize any chance of failure &ndash; a process that has been used in the industry for decades.
With automotive digital disruption including the steady progression from automatic to autonomous, manufacturers should look to the future automation of their financial processes as well. But make no mistake, automation is trending in all facets of the industry.&nbsp;

As remarkable as AVs are, the rise of digitalization (and automation) within the auto industry has not been limited to futuristic technologies like self-driving cars. It is inherent in the processes by which vehicles of all types are designed, manufactured and sold, and more specifically, digital technologies. AVs are likely to result in growing expenditures on technology and electronics. By the end of the decade, the average car is expected to have around 300 million lines of code, and AVs will have up to 500 million lines! In contrast, the Boeing 787&rsquo;s avionics and online support systems combined have less than 20 million lines of code.

The need to shift automation into high gear is due to 4 macro trends impacting the industry today: autonomy, connectivity, electrification and shifting buying patterns (ACES). These trends will have far-reaching effects on the way automakers operate, from design, development and vehicle engineering to their supplier base and production processes.
